At a SWE networking dinner last week, we learned that the real-life Mom from the Cheaper By the Dozen story was an industrial engineer and the first honorary SWE member. Lillian Moller Gilbreth had twelve children which seems like a really large number of things to have, but she had nearly twice as many honorary degrees – 23! In 1984, the USPS put her on a stamp in the Great Americans series with some of my other favorite people like Pearl Buck (author of The Good Earth).
I read Cheaper By the Dozen many years ago, which was written by two of Lillian’s children and there have been a couple of movies based on this family. One of the reasons I keep going to these dinners with other women engineers is that I always learn something interesting. We have groups that meet all over the Chicagoland area. If you haven’t checked it out yet, what are you waiting for?
