There is an IT Services firm in France that plans to ban internal email within the next two years. In my previous job, I used to spend the first hour or so every day working through email. And then I’d let it interrupt me during the day and spend a few more hours in it. One of the best parts about starting a new job is that the volume of email has decreased significantly. Some of my new coworkers even call me on the phone with questions! Do you think you could replace email with social media and instant messaging at your office?
My old company was good at instant messaging (Webex Connect) and wikis and blogs, the new one is way behind. At the old company, we even had a Facebook-type tool called Yammer that I was just starting to embrace before I left. I’m just not sure if I’m willing to give up email. I like having my own archive of information, that can’t be edited by someone else like a wiki or blog can be. On the other hand, it makes the information more readily available to everyone, no more forgetting to copy somebody. I’m willing to give it a try if I can keep my email as a backup. I do miss the blog my old team used to use… What are your favorite non-email communication tools?
